Veg Pizza or simply Pizza is traditionally an Italian cuisine prepared from Plain Flour, Cheese and different types of veggies. It is also seasoned with Oregano, Chilli Flakes and Mixed Herbs. It is served as a starter or appetizer. Pizza has its origination from Italy but later on it slowly moved to other parts of the world. There are many variations and varieties of Pizza prepared by varying the toppings. To prepare pizza, Maida dough is first rolled into circle shape roti and then topped with veggies and cheese. It is then baked to prepare the pizza.
Pizza is one of my favourite dish which I frequently have when I am out with my family. I have been eating this for many years but never thought to prepare it at home. The reason behind it was that it looked very difficult to prepare. The first time that I prepared Pizza at home was when I was in my village. After a very long time, I was there for about continuous 2 months. There were no Pizza restaurants near my village and it was very difficult for me to stay away from it for so long. It was then that I decided to prepare Pizza and Garlic Bread at home.
I tried both the recipes in a single day and both came out perfect. My mom and dad were also very surprised after having Pizza at home. Having Pizza at home, my mom remembered the Pizza that she had in dominos and pizza hut. We in our family normally have Pizza and Garlic Bread together. We start with Garlic Bread and end it with Pizza. Today I will be sharing the recipe of Veg Pizza. Please visit Cheese Garlic Bread to prepare garlic bread at home.
Whenever we plan to prepare something special at home, the first thing that comes to our mind is the taste of the dish. The taste of the dish should be perfect. The same thing applies for Pizza. One of the major contributor of taste in Pizza is the veggies toppings. We can prepare Veg Pizza at home in different flavours using different types of veggies as toppings. Here we will be using veggies such as Tomatoes, Onion, Capsicum, Jalapeno, Red Paprika, Olive and Sweet Corn. You can skip any of these veggies if you want. You can also choose other veggies such as Button Mushroom, Sweet Corn Kernel, French Beans, Cabbage, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Sprouts, Paneer Cubes, etc.
We frequently visit various Pizza outlets and order different types of Veg Pizza. There are many options of Veg Pizza in the menu such as Margherita, Farmhouse, Veg Extravaganza, Cheese and Corn, Mexican Green Wave, Tomato Veg Pizza, Onion Pizza, Veggie Paradise, etc. The process of preparing all these types of pizza is similar with only difference in their vegetable toppings. The type of veggie toppings decides the name of the pizza. The name of pizza in this post is simply Veg Pizza since I will be using a number of vegetables.
The other factor which plays important role in deciding the taste of Pizza is the use of Cheese. There are different types of cheese you can use to prepare pizza. Here we will be using mixture of Mozzarella and Cheddar Cheese. Use adequate amount of cheese if you want to make Cheese Burst Pizza or Cheesilicious Pizza.
You can prepare Pizza either in soft form or crispy form. To make the pizza soft and fluffy, keep the pizza base little thicker. It will prevent the pizza base from becoming hard. If you want to make crispy pizza then make the base little thinner and bake for little extra time. It will make the pizza crispy and crusty. While baking, do keep in mind that the base does not burn from below.
To prepare super soft and fluffy pizza, follow below tips and tricks:
- Activation of Dry Yeast: Fermentation of Pizza dough is necessary to prepare pizza. To ferment the maida dough, we use Dry Yeast. Before using it, we need to activate the dry yeast. Activation of Yeast is necessary because if the yeast is not activated then the dough will not ferment. To activate the yeast we use Sugar which acts as a catalyst and helps in starting the process of fermentation. First dissolve Sugar in warm water and then add Dry Yeast. Dissolve it completely and allow it to rest for about 10-15 minutes by covering it. You will see that froths are formed which indicates that the yeast has been activated. Now you can use it to prepare the dough. If froths are not formed then it means that the yeast has not been activated. In such case try with another batch of Dry Yeast. Yeast can be Active Dry Yeast, Instant Yeast or Fresh Yeast.
- Kneading of Dough: To prepare soft and fluffy pizza, the dough should be little sticky. Use appropriate amount of water to prepare the dough.
- Resting of Pizza Dough: After kneading the dough, allow it to rest for about 1½ to 2 hours by covering it. During this time the dough will ferment and become almost double its size.
- Rolling of Flat Bread or Roti: You can prepare pizza in two ways. One is soft and fluffy and the other is the crispy. For soft pizza, prepare thick flat roti while rolling the dough. To make crispy pizza, roll the dough into little thin flat roti. Also bake the pizza for little more time.
- Baking of Veg Pizza: Proper baking of Pizza is necessary, so pre heat the baking setup for about 15 minutes before putting the pizza in the setup to bake.
To prepare Veg Pizza first we need to activate the Dry Yeast. Take Warm Water or Warm Milk in a cup. To it add Sugar and stir to dissolve it completely. Next add Dry Yeast to the sugar water and stir it completely. Cover the cup and allow it to rest for about 10-15 minutes. After 10-15 minutes you will see that froths and bubbles are formed at the surface. Formation of bubbles or froths indicates that the yeast has been activated. If there are no formation of froths then it means that the yeast has not been activated. Do not use it and try different brand of yeast.
Take a large bowl and add All Purpose Flour, Oregano, Chilli Flakes, Garlic Powder and Salt. Mix all the ingredients uniformly. Next add the activated Yeast and then knead the flour to prepare soft dough. The dough should be little sticky so that Pizza remains soft on baking. If required you can add extra water to knead the flour. Keep kneading the flour for around 10-12 minutes. On kneading you will see that slowly and slowly it starts coming together. When the dough almost comes together, apply Oil all over the surface of the dough. Cover the dough and allow it to rest for about 1½ to 2 hours in a warm place. During this time the dough will ferment and double in its size.
After 1½ to 2 hours, remove the cover from the dough. The dough becomes almost double the initial size. Knead the dough again for few minutes and then divide it into two equal parts. Roll each part into a ball shape. Now sprinkle some maida on rolling board or on flat surface of kitchen shelf. Place the dough over it and with the help of rolling pin roll it into circle shape roti of thickness of about 4 to 5 mm.
Now take the pizza tray and grease it with butter or oil. Sprinkle some maida over the tray. Place the rolled pizza in the tray and stretch it slightly with your fingers. Press the pizza along its edges to lift the edges. This helps in preventing the cheese from flowing out of the pizza on melting. The pizza should be thicker at the edges and thinner at the centre. Now take fork and pierce the pizza base randomly at few places. This is done so that the base does not puff on baking.
Add Pizza Sauce to the pizza base and spread it evenly all over the base leaving the edges. Next take grated Cheese and spread it all over the pizza base. Over the cheese, place sliced veggies such as Onion, Tomato, Sweet Corn, Capsicum, Red Paprika, Jalapeno and Olives. Sprinkle Oregano, Chilli Flakes and Mixed Herbs over the veggies. Now we will bake Veg Pizza in microwave oven or homemade baking setup. Here we are going to bake in homemade baking setup.
To make the baking setup, heat heavy base kadai on medium heat. Add Regular Salt and place the stand over it. Cover the kadai and preheat it for almost 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, open the lid and place the pizza tray with Veg Pizza over the stand. Cover the lid and bake it for almost 15 minutes. After 15 minutes switch off the flame and take out the tray from the kadai. Veg Pizza is ready to serve. Cut it and serve it hot by sprinkling some Oregano and Chilli Flakes.

Equipments:

- Regular Salt
- Fork
Ingredients:
For Activating Yeast:
- 2 teaspoon Dry Yeast
- 1 teaspoon Sugar
- 1/2 cup Warm Water/Warm Milk
For Pizza Dough:
- 2 cups All Purpose Flour (Maida)
- 2 teaspoon Oregano (Optional)
- 1 teaspoon Chilli Flakes (Optional)
- 2 teaspoon Garlic Powder (Optional)
- 2 teaspoon Butter or Oil
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- Milk/Water for kneading (As required)
For Pizza Toppings:
- 1 piece Onion (Sliced or cut in cube shape)
- 1 piece Tomato (Sliced or cut in cube shape)
- 1/2 cup Capsicum (Mix of Green, Red & Yellow Capsicum/Bell Pepper) (Sliced or cut in cube shape)
- 1/4 cup Sweet Corn
- 1/4 cup Button Mushroom
- 1/4 cup Jalapeno
- 10-12 sliced pieces Olives
- Pizza Sauce (As Required)
- Grated Cheese (Mixture of Mozzarella & Cheddar Cheese) (As Required)
- Oregano (As Required)
- Chilli Flakes (As Required)
- Mixed Herbs (As Required)
- 2 tablespoon Butter/Oil
- 3 tablespoon Plain Flour/Corn Meal (For Dusting)
Instructions:
Preparation of Pizza Dough:
- First let us activate the Yeast. Take Warm Water or Warm Milk in a cup. Water/Milk should be warm and not hot or else the yeast might not get activated.
- Add a teaspoon of Sugar to the Water and stir it to completely dissolve it. Sugar acts as a catalyst which is added to activate the Yeast.
- Next add Dry Yeast to the sugar water and stir it to dissolve completely. Cover the cup and allow it to rest for about 10-15 minutes.
- After 10-15 minutes, you will see that froths and bubbles are formed at the surface which indicates that the Yeast has been activated.
- If froths are not formed at the surface, it means that the Yeast has not been activated. Do not use it and try with another batch of yeast. Keep the activated yeast aside.
- Now take All Purpose Flour in a large bowl. To it add Garlic Powder, Oregano, Chilli Flakes and Salt.
- Mix all the ingredients uniformly with your palm. These ingredients are optional and you can skip it if you want. But I would suggest you to use it since it enhances the taste and adds aroma to the Pizza.
- Next add the activated yeast to the mixture. Mix and knead the mixture to prepare soft dough. If required you can add extra water while kneading.
- The dough should be little sticky. Sticky dough will help in preparing soft and fluffy Pizza. Knead the dough for about 10-15 minutes.
- Once the dough is prepared, apply some oil over the dough so that it does not stick further with the bowl. Cover the dough and place it in a warm place for about 1½ to 2 hours to ferment. During this time the dough will double in its size.
Rolling and Topping of Veg Pizza:
- First wash all the veggies such as Onion, Tomato, Capsicum, Mushroom, Jalapeno and Olive. Cut or slice them as required or as per your convenience. Keep them aside.
- Remove the lid from the dough. The dough becomes almost double in size. Knead the dough again for few minutes to remove the air bubbles.
- Divide the dough into two equal parts. You can also divide it into 3 equal parts depending upon the size of your pizza tray. If your pizza tray is big you can use the entire dough in one go. Roll all the parts into circle shaped dough.
- Now take small amount of Maida and sprinkle it over rolling board or over the flat surface of your kitchen. Place the dough over the flat surface.
- Roll the dough with the help of rolling pin to make flat circle shape roti of thickness of approx. 4 to 5 mm. You can also flatten the dough with your palm by stretching it outwards. The thickness of the roti can be varied as per your requirement.
- Now take Pizza tray and grease the surface with Butter. Sprinkle some maida or corn meal over the tray.
- Place the rolled dough in the tray. Slightly stretch the pizza dough with your palm and make it uniform from all sides.
- Next press the pizza along its edges with your fingers to slightly raise the edges. The pizza should be thicker at the edges and thinner at the centre. Raising the edges of Pizza prevents the cheese from flowing out of the pizza on melting.
- Now take fork and pierce the pizza base randomly at 9 to 10 places. This is done so that the pizza base does not puff on baking.
- Next add Pizza Sauce and spread it evenly over the pizza leaving the edges.
- Take the Grated/Shredded Cheese and spread it all over the pizza base. Over the cheese add the sliced veggies such as Onion, Tomato, Sweet Corn, Capsicum, Mushroom, Jalapeno and Olives.
- Sprinkle Oregano, Chilli Flakes and Mixed Herbs over the veggies. Lastly spread some more cheese if desired avoiding over the veggies. Keep it aside and let’s start making the baking set up.
Baking of Veg Pizza:
- To make the baking set up switch on the gas and place the heavy base kadai over it. Add Regular Salt to it and place the stand over the salt.
- Cover the kadai with lid and allow it to preheat for about 15 minutes over medium heat. This is the baking setup. You can bake the Pizza in microwave oven also.
- After 15 minutes of pre heating, open the lid and place the tray with Pizza over the stand.
- Cover the kadai again and bake the Pizza for about 15 minutes under medium flame. If you are baking in microwave oven, then bake it at 180 degree Celsius for about 15 minutes.
- After 15 minutes switch off the gas. Open the lid and take out the tray. Sprinkle some Oregano and Chilli Flakes over the Pizza.
- Tasty, delicious and mouthwatering Veg Pizza is ready to serve. Cut the Pizza with pizza cutter and serve it hot.
Notes:
- Pizza is mostly prepared using All Purpose Flour. You can replace it with Whole Wheat Flour if you want. There will be slight difference in the taste.
- Here we have used Garlic Powder while kneading the dough to enhance the taste of the pizza. You can skip it if you want.
- Fermentation of dough is the most important part in preparing Pizza. It is done by using activated yeast. To activate the Yeast, Sugar is mixed with Warm Water or Milk and then Yeast is added to it. It is left covered for 15 minutes to activate the Yeast.
- To check whether the yeast is activated or not, see if froths and bubbles are formed at the surface. If froths are formed, it means the yeast has been activated. If froths are not formed then it means that it has not been activated. In such case try with another batch of yeast.
- Allow the dough to rest for about 1 ½ to 2 hours after it is kneaded. During this time the dough will be double in size. It helps in preparing soft and fluffy Pizza.
- While spreading the Pizza dough in the pizza tray, lift the edges of it so that it helps in containing the veggies and cheese within itself and prevent them from flowing outwards. Pizza should be thick at the edges and little thinner at the centre.
- Before spreading Pizza Sauce over the pizza base, pierce the base at few places with the help of fork. It will prevent the pizza from puffing.
- As a topping you can use other veggies such as Sweet Corn Kernel, French Beans, Cabbage, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Sprouts, Jalapeno, etc.
- Seasoning is also very important for Veg Pizza. It enhances the taste of pizza and adds aroma to it. Vary the amount of seasoning as per your choice.
- If you want to prepare Cheese Burst Pizza, use generous amount of shredded cheese. Use the mixture of Mozzarella and Cheddar Cheese.
- If you want to bake the Pizza in microwave oven then bake it for about 15 minutes at 180 degree Celsius in a pre-heated oven.
- Do not over bake the Pizza or else it will burn and become hard. 15-20 minutes of baking under medium flame is fine.
