Homemade Turmeric Powder or Haldi Powder is an authentic Indian spice used in preparing almost all the Indian recipes. It is made from fresh Turmeric Roots or Dried Turmeric. It is easy and quick to prepare. This powder does not involve any roasting process unlike other Homemade Masala Powder.

There are many benefits of preparing spices at home. Readymade spices which are easily available in the market are of poor quality and many companies prepare it by adding colour and other impurities. By preparing the spices at home, you get assurance that homemade spices are free from any type of adulteration and synthetic colours. Homemade Spices have natural taste and colour. So practice and make habit of preparing homemade spices and use it in your foods.

Today we are going to prepare Turmeric Powder which we generally refer as Haldi Powder. There are two ways of preparing the turmeric powder. One is by using fresh turmeric roots and the other is by using dry turmeric. Dry haldi can be bought from the markets which are easily available. This market bought dry haldi can also have adulteration. However purchasing dry haldi to prepare haldi powder is atleast better than purchasing it from readymade haldi powder.

Here I will be sharing the process of making the Haldi Powder by both the ways. Preparing the haldi by using fresh turmeric roots involves many steps such as washing, boiling, drying and grinding. Turmeric Roots looks similar to ginger so don’t confuse on it. This process takes about one week. However the turmeric powder that we prepare by this process is the most authentic one. While preparing the haldi by using dry haldi takes only few minutes and involves only grinding process.

Since the process of preparing the haldi powder from fresh turmeric powder takes more time, so most people prefer to skip the process of boiling and drying of fresh turmeric roots. In such case, people prefer to use dry turmeric which is directly blended to prepare Homemade Turmeric Powder.

One important thing that you have to follow is that you must use high power mixer grinder to blend the turmeric. It is because turmeric are hard and they require much force to grind. Also do not blend the turmeric at one stretch or else it will over heat the mixer grinder. Take break of 1-2 minutes in between while blending. During the break open the lid of the jar and keep mixing the masala powder regularly.

Fresh Turmeric Roots has very small self-life. So if you are using fresh turmeric roots to prepare the haldi powder then immediately dry the turmeric and then blend it when it is still crispy. If you have very less time and cannot wait for a week to dry the turmeric, then use market bought dried turmeric.

  1. Preparing Turmeric Powder from Fresh Turmeric Roots:

Take the Fresh Turmeric Roots and wash them properly. Boil the Turmeric Roots in water for about 45 minutes under low to medium flame. After boiling, drain the water and then allow it too cool down completely. Cut the turmeric roots into small pieces. Allow it to dry. Dry the roots for at least a week. Dry the turmeric till is very crisp or else the haldi powder may get spoiled very quickly. When it completely dries up, the roots will shrink. Transfer them to mixer grinder jar. Blend it into smooth and fine powder. Sieve the blended powder and then grind the leftover again into smooth powder. Cool the masala and then store it in air tight container.

  1. Preparing Turmeric Powder from Dried Turmeric:

Take the dried turmeric in mixer grinder jar. Blend it into fine powder. Sieve the powder and grind the leftover again till you get smooth powder. Allow the powder to cool completely and then transfer it to air tight container.

Turmeric Powder is not only used as spice in Indian kitchen but also used for many health benefits. It also has many medicinal properties:

  1. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties which help in healing cold and cough.
