Homemade Cumin Powder or Jeera Powder is a quick to make masala powder prepared from Cumin Seeds. The cumin seeds are first roasted and are then grinded to make smooth, fresh and aromatic Jeera Powder. Homemade Cumin Powder is free from preservative and adulteration. We use this spice in preparing curries, gravies, salads, Raita, etc. It adds extra flavour to the recipe that we prepare at home.

Homemade Cumin Powder is very easy to make at home. The quality of homemade masala is superior to the readymade masala which is easily available in the market. The homemade masala is free from any preservative and is pure. So I would suggest all my readers to prepare this masala powder at home. It requires only 12-15 minutes to prepare. Prepare the masala at once and store it to use for many months. I have already shared Homemade Coriander Powder which is also one of the important spices in our kitchen apart from Cumin Powder.

To prepare Cumin Powder, dry roast the cumin seeds under low flame till it slightly changes its colour. Do not over roast the cumin seeds as it will change the taste of the masala. Cool the roasted cumin seeds and then blend it to make the fresh and aromatic Homemade Cumin Powder. Cumin Powder has many health benefits. People use it in many health drinks that help in weight loss. It helps in reducing cholesterol level and also helps in digestion.

To prepare Jeera Powder at home, there are few things that we need to follow while preparing it.

  1. While roasting the Cumin Seeds, do not leave the seeds unattended. Keep mixing the seeds continuously so that it does not burn. It can ruin the taste if it burns.
  2. Roast the seeds under low flame. It helps in proper roasting and prevents it from burning. Roast it till it slightly changes its colour and starts leaving fragrance.
  3. Grind the seeds to make smooth powder only when the seeds cool completely.
  4. After you grind the cumin seeds, sieve it using a sieve or a filter. The coarse powder left after sieving can be grinded again to make smooth powder.
  5. Store the masala powder in an air tight container after it cools completely. It can be used for few months if stored in a packed container. Do not use wet hand or spoon while using the masala.

Homemade Cumin Powder/Homemade Jeera Powder

Equipments:

  • Heavy Base Pan or Kadai

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams Cumin Seeds

Instructions:

  • Heat pan or kadai over low heat.
  • Add the Cumin (Jeera) Seeds and dry roast it. Do not leave it unattended for longer duration or else it will burn.
  • While roasting the cumin seeds keep stirring it continuously till it starts leaving fragrance and aroma.
  • When the seeds start changing its colour to light brown, switch off the stove.
  • Take out the roasted cumin seeds in a broad plate and allow it to cool.
  • After the roasted cumin seeds cools completely, transfer it to a mixer grinder jar.
  • Close the lid of the jar and grind it to make a smooth powder.
  • Blend the mixture until a finely smooth powder is formed. Keep checking in between for the smoothness of the cumin powder.
  • Once we get fine and smooth powder, switch off the grinder. Homemade Cumin Powder is ready to use.

  • Cool the masala powder and then transfer it to an air tight container. Store in a cool and dry place.

Notes:

  1. Do not leave the Cumin Seeds unattended while roasting. Keep stirring it continuously so that it does not burn and is roasted evenly.
  2. Roast the Cumin Seeds under low flame. Don’t let the seeds to burn or else it will ruin the taste of the cumin powder.
  3. Cumin Powder can be prepared without roasting also. Simply blend the cumin seeds in a mixer grinder to smooth powder. But the real taste of the masala powder comes when it is prepared by roasting the seeds.
  4. Grind the roasted cumin seeds after it gets cooled completely.
  5. Homemade Cumin Powder can be used for months if it is stored in an air tight container in cool and dry place.
  6. Never touch the masala powder with wet hand or spoon or else it will not last longer and will become bad very easily.
