We have several dishes that we serve as a side dish such as Pickle, Raita, Chutney, Sweets and Desserts, etc. The most famous among them is the Chutney dishes. In Chutney also there are various types and flavours of chutney’s. We serve chutney as a side dish since it adds extra flavour to our meal. Chutney can be sweet or sour or tangy or spicy. The type of chutney to be selected depends on the type of food that we are having. I have been sharing a number of chutney recipes in my food blog and today I am going to share Sweet Tomato Chutney. Sweet Tomato Chutney is a spicy and tangy dip that we prepare from tomato and sugar or Jaggery (Gudd.)

Sweet Tomato Chutney or Tamatar Ki Meethi Chutney is prepared in the same way as Tomato Garlic chutney with sugar or jaggery replacing salt. It is very easy and quick to make. To prepare the chutney we need ripe tomatoes so that we can easily cook. If the tomatoes are not ripe then chutney will not come out good which can ruin the taste of the chutney. You can add sugar or jaggery for sweetness as per your choice. If you like you can add both the ingredients as per your requirement since it will add extra flavour to the chutney. Add both the ingredients in appropriate amount to get a sweet, spicy and tangy taste.

To prepare Sweet Tomato Chutney, first cook Tomatoes with Cumin Seeds, Mustard Seeds, Asafoetida, Curry Leaves, Ginger, Garlic, etc. When the tomatoes become soft, add Sugar or Jaggery and cook for another few minutes. Switch off the stove and serve hot or cold as per your desire.

Sweet Tomato Chutney or Tamatar Ki Meethi Chutney is mostly famous in East India. You can serve it hot or cold and can be served with Indian Breads, Bread Pakoda, Samosa, Pakodas, Chillas, Paranthas or Plain Rice. Sweet Tomato Chutney is prepared by first cooking Tomatoes with Cumin Seeds, Mustard Seeds, Asafoetida, Curry Leaves, Ginger, Garlic, etc. Then Sugar or Jaggery is added and cooked for another few minutes.

Ingredients:

  • 5-6 medium Chopped Ripe Tomato
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Chopped Ginger
  • 6-7 pieces Garlic Cloves
  • 1 pieces Dried Red Chilli
  • 1/4 teaspoon Asafoetida
  • 1/2 cup Sugar or Jaggery
  • 10-12 leaves Curry Leaves
  • 2 tablespoon Mustard Oil

Instructions:

  • Heat 2 tablespoon oil in a Frying pan. Add Cumin Seeds, Mustard Seeds, Asafoetida and Curry Leaves. Cook till the crackling sound comes from it.
  • Add the Dried Red Chillies, Garlic Cloves and Chopped Ginger. Fry it for a minute.
  • Now add the Chopped Tomatoes. Mix it well.
  • Cook the tomatoes for 10-15 minutes by covering the pan. Fry it till the tomatoes become soft and mushy.
  • When the tomatoes become soft, mash it with a large spoon to make a smooth paste.
  • Add Sugar and cook for another 5 minutes. After the mixture is cooked properly, switch off the flame.
  • Take it out in a bowl and serve it hot or cold with any of your favourite recipe.

Notes:

  1. Tomatoes used in this chutney should be totally ripe. It will give a very good taste. If the tomatoes are not ripe, the chutney will not come out good.
  2. Add sugar as per your taste. You can replace it with Jaggery.
  3. If required you can add water to it while cooking.
