Dabeli Recipe or Kutchi Dabeli is a popular Gujarati Street food which has its origination from Kutch in Gujarat. Since it has its origination from Gujarat, people call it as Kutchi Dabeli also. We also call it as Kucchi Dabeli or Kuchchi Dabeli. We can find it selling along the street in Gujarat and Mumbai. Apart from Pav Bhaji and Vada Pav, Dabeli is also one of the favourite street food recipes in Mumbai and Gujarat.

Dabeli is a potato filling inside a pav combined with Chilli Garlic Chutney and Sweet Date Tamarind Chutney. It is drizzled with Finely Chopped Onions, Pomegranate Seeds, Spiced Masala Peanuts and Nylon Sev. You can also add Grated Coconut and Chopped Coriander Leaves. It is optional. You can serve it plain or grill with with butter on both sides. Grilling the pav makes it more tasty and flavorful.

Dabeli is a common street food in Gujarat. In Delhi we don’t find this recipe. The first time that I ate Dabeli was when I shifted to Gujarat for my official work. It was really very impressive. I started having it regularly in my office. It was during this time that I thought to give it a try at home. Sunday, and wow I gave it a go and it came out very good. From then onwards I keep preparing Dabeli at home only. Even when I go to Delhi, I prepare it for my family also. They love it too.

To prepare Dabeli, it takes lot of time. First we prepare Chilli Garlic Chutney. Then we prepare Date Tamarind Chutney. If you do not have the readymade Dabeli Masala Powder, we need to make it. After that we have to prepare the Potato stuffing. To prepare the potato stuffing, we use the Dabeli Masala and Sweet Date Tamarind Chutney. After preparing the stuffing, we use it to sandwich between the slice of pav to make Kutchi Dabeli. This whole process of making the Dabeli Recipe takes a lot of time. But if you have few ingredients well prepared beforehand, it becomes easy to prepare and also becomes less time consuming. If you use the Readymade Dabeli Masala, the task becomes easier.

Here I have prepared the Chilli Garlic Chutney, Date Tamarind Chutney and Homemade Dabeli Masala Powder beforehand. Due to this I was able to prepare the Dabeli recipe in very less time. I will suggest you to prepare these ingredients beforehand. I have not mentioned the steps to prepare the chutney and Dabeli masala in this post. Dabeli / Kucchi Dabeli / Kutchi Dabeli / How to make Dabeli

Dabeli or Kutchi Dabeli is a Gujarati recipe prepared from Potato stuffing that is sandwiched between the slices of pav along with Date Tamarind Chutney and Chilli Garlic Chutney.

Ingredients:

For Potato Masala Filling:

  • 3 medium Boiled Potatoes
  • 1/2 cup Spicy Peanut (Masala Moongphali)
  • 1/4 cup Pomegranate Seeds
  • 2 teaspoon Dabeli Masala Powder (Link above)
  • 1/4 cup Khajur Imli Chutney (DateTamarind Chutney) (Link above)
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • Salt to Taste

For Layering & Garnishing:

  • 8 pieces Pav
  • 8 teaspoon Date & Tamarind Chutney (Link above)
  • 8 teaspoon Chilli Garlic Chutney (Link above)
  • 1 cup Nylon Sev
  • 1/4 cup Grated Coconut (Optional)
  • 1 medium Finely Chopped Onion
  • Butter for toasting

Instructions:

To prepare Potato Stuffing:

  • Heat Oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the Mashed Boiled Potato.
  • Add Dabeli Masala Powder and Salt. Mix them properly.
  • Add Date-Tamarind Chutney and mix so that the chutney is evenly spread throughout the potato mixture.
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes. Keep mixing in between so that it doesn’t stick to the bottom.
  • Turn off the flame and allow the mixture to cool down.
  • When it cools down, add the spiced Peanuts and Pomegranate Seeds and mix them.
  • Take it out in a plate and keep it aside.

To prepare Dabeli Recipe:

  • Take the pav and slice it from middle into two parts.
  • Apply Chilli Garlic Chutney on both sides.
  • Then apply Date-Tamarind Chutney on both sides above the Chilli Garlic Chutney.
  • Put some Potato stuffing over one of the slice of pav.
  • Spread small amount of Chopped Onion and Nylon Sev over it. Also sprinkle Grated Coconut over it.
  • If you want, you can top the potato stuffing with more peanuts and pomegranate seeds.
  • Close the stuffing with the other slice and press it gently.
  • Now heat tawa or pan. Add butter into it.

  • Toast the pav in butter from both sides until it becomes crispy. Coat the sides of Dabeli with Nylon Sev.

  • Kachchi Dabeli is ready to be served. Serve it hot with Tea or Coffee.

Notes:

  1. The taste of Kuchhi Dabeli depends on the Dabeli Masala. The taste of Dabeli is sweet. If you want to reduce the sweetness, add less sugar to it.
  2. If you want, you can skip the addition of Grated Coconut. It’s optional.
  3. You can replace the Red Chilli Garlic Chutney with Coriander Chutney or Mint Chutney or Coriander Mint Chutney.
  4. Spiced Peanuts can be replaced with Plain Peanuts if you want Dabeli to be less spicy.
