Jeera Rice is an easy and quick North Indian aromatic cuisine prepared from Jeera and Rice in a pressure cooker. It is steam Rice with Cumin flavour. The only difference between Steam Rice and Jeera Rice is that when cumin is crackled in ghee or oil with steamed rice, it becomes Jeera Rice.  The flavour of the rice doubles when we add various whole spices such as Cinnamon Stick, Cardamom, Clove, Bay Leaves, etc. to it.

There are two ways of preparing Cumin Rice. The first method is by using pressure cooker while the second method is by using an open pot. Today I will be preparing this recipe by the first method that is by using pressure cooker. Preparing Cumin Rice in cooker is easy and less time consuming. Whenever you are in hurry and in mood to have Jeera Rice, go ahead with this method. In my previous post I have already shared the second method of preparing this recipe. Please visit Cumin Rice in Open Pot to prepare this recipe with the second method that is in an open pot.

To prepare fluffy Rice, remember not to mix the rice too much while cooking. Also after the cooking of rice is complete, allow it to cool down itself for few minutes before fluffing with spoon or fork. Some people skip the whole spices to prepare the Jeera Rice. But adding the whole spices adds extra flavour to the rice. Slightly crush the whole spices before frying them in oil. It helps in proper extraction of the flavour into the rice.

To prepare Jeera Rice in cooker, fry the whole spices such as Cumin Seeds, Cardamom, Cinnamon Stick, Cloves, Dry Red Chilli and Bay Leaves in oil over medium heat. Do not allow the whole spices to burn. Then add the washed Basmati Rice along with Salt and Water. Mix all the ingredients and then cover the cooker with the lid. Over medium flame cook the Rice foe two whistles. Switch off the stove and allow it to cool down by itself. Open the lid and add Chopped Coriander Leaves. Then with the help of fork, fluff it gently from all sides. Jeera Rice in cooker style is ready to be served. You can take out the whole spices from the rice before serving it.

Jeera Rice tastes best with Dal Tadka or Dal Fry. You can also serve it with other Indian Curry recipes. Serve the Rice by garnishing with Chopped Coriander Leaves. You can also garnish it with some Golden Fried Onion.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Basmati Rice
  • 2 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 2 inch Cinnamon Stick
  • 1 piece Black Cardamom
  • 2 piece Cloves
  • 2 piece Dry Red Chilli
  • 2 piece Bay Leaves
  • 2 tablespoon Ghee
  • 4 tablespoon Chopped Coriander Leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 cup Water

Instructions:

  • Wash and rinse the Basmati Rice properly under running water so that the starch is removed. Keep it aside.
  • Heat Oil or Ghee in a pressure cooker under medium heat.
  • Add Cinnamon Stick, Black Cardamom, Cloves, Dry Red Chilli and Bay Leaves. Black Cardamom should be broken into two pieces so that the Rice absorbs its flavour properly.
  • Fry it for 30 seconds by continuously stirring. Be careful that the Bay Leaves do not burn.
  • Add Cumin Seeds and allow it to crackle. Fry till the crackle completely stops and the Cumin is well cooked. Uncooked Cumin can change the taste of the rice.
  • Now add Basmati Rice, Salt and Water. Mix it with a spatula.
  • Cover the lid of the cooker and pressure cook for two whistles under medium heat.
  • Switch off the stove and allow the pressure of the cooker to come down by itself.

Notes:

  1. Jeera Rice can also be prepared in open pot. I usually prepare the Jeera Rice in cooker since it takes less time.
  2. Cumin Seeds should be completely cooked otherwise the taste of uncooked Jeera will change the taste of the Jeera Rice.
  3. Add Salt as per your taste or add it depending upon the Curry Recipe with which you will have the Jeera Rice.
  4. If you are not so fond of Ghee in your diet, you can replace it with any other type of oil or Butter.
  5. The whole spices can be removed before serving the Jeera Rice.
