Green Moong Dal Curry or Tadka is a North Indian cuisine prepared from whole Green Moong Dal, Tomato Onion paste and spices. All these ingredients are simmered to make the Green Moong Dal Curry. It is delicious, nutritious and easy to prepare. It is prepared in the same way as Dal Makhani where we use whole urad dal. The only difference is that to prepare Dal Makhani, we need to invest more time. Green Moong Dal Tadka takes very less time compared to Dal Makhani.

Green Moong Dal is very nutritious and good for health. It is extremely light, low in fat content and high in protein value. Sprouted Moong Dal is one of the best sources of plant based protein. It has many health benefits due to its high nutrients value of minerals such as iron, copper, potassium and magnesium. Moong Dal helps in weight loss and improves heart health as it is easy to digest. It also boosts blood circulation and prevents diabetes. Sprouted Moong Dal is a power house of nutrients and fibre. Due to its high value of protein, people prefer to have it in early morning. To prepare Sprouts, soak the Moong Dal overnight and in the morning wash it and consume it raw.

To prepare Green Moong Dal Curry, soak the Moong Dal overnight or for 7-8 hours. Wash it and pressure cook till the lentils become soft. Mash the lentils slightly with the help of spatula. Now in a pan or kadai, heat Oil and add Cumin Seeds and Asafoetida. Let the cumin to crackle. Then add Green Chilli and Ginger Garlic Paste. Saute for few seconds. Next add Onion Paste and fry till it becomes golden in colour.

When the Onions become slightly brown in colour, add Tomato Paste and again cook till it starts leaving oil at the edges of the pan or kadai. Add the spices and cook for another few minutes. At last add the boiled Moong Dal and simmer all the ingredients under low flame. Simmer the dal for a longer time. The more you simmer the tastier and flavourful it becomes. Serve the delicious Green Moong Dal Tadka by garnishing with Coriander Leaves. You can also add Butter to it.

Ingredients:

To Boil Green Moong Dal (1 Cup = 250 ml:)

  • 1 cup Sabut Green Moong Dal
  • 3 cups Water
  • 1 teaspoon Salt

To prepare Green Moong Dal Tadka:

  • 2 medium Tomato Paste
  • 1 medium Onion Paste
  • 1 tablespoon Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 2 piece Slit Green Chilli
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
  • 2 teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • A pinch Asafoetida
  • 2 tablespoon Chopped Coriander Leaves
  • 2 tablespoon Oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as required

Instructions:

Boiling Whole Green Moong Dal:

  • Wash the Whole Green Moong Dal with water by rinsing it. Soak the Dal overnight or soak for 7-8 hours with Water
  • Once soaked, wash the Dal properly once again before boiling. Pressure cook the Dal with Water and Salt under medium heat for 3-4 whistles.
  • After 3-4 whistles, reduce the heat to low and cook for another 10 minutes more.
  • Switch off the stove and allow the pressure to release by its own.
  • After the pressure releases completely, open the lid of the cooker and mash the Dal with a large spoon or spatula.
  • Take out the mashed Dal from the cooker into a separate large bowl and keep it aside.

Preparing Moong Dal Tadka/Curry:

  • Heat Oil in a pan or kadai over medium heat. Add Cumin Seeds and Asafoetida. Allow it to crackle.
  • Once the crackling stops, add Green Chilli and Ginger Garlic Paste. Saute it for few seconds.
  • Next add Onion Paste and fry it till the onion turns light golden in colour. The onion should be fried till it changes its colour to light brown or else it will remain raw and the taste of Dal will not be good.
  • Now add the Tomato Paste, mix it and cook till oil starts leaving from the edges of the pan or kadai.
  • Add the spices such as Turmeric Powder, Red Chilli Powder, Coriander Powder, Garam Masala and Salt.
  • Mix and cook till the spices are properly cooked. The spices should not remain raw. If needed add small amount of water.
  • When the spices get cooked properly, add the boiled Moong Dal along with required amount of Water. Mix it.
  • Simmer the Moong Dal by stirring it on regular intervals over low flame.
  • After few minutes, the Dal starts thickening. At this point switch off the gas.
  • Add Chopped Coriander Leaves and mix it with the Dal. Green Moong Dal Tadka is ready to be served.

  • Serve the Dal by garnishing with Coriander Leaves with your favourite Rice Recipes, Roti, Naan or Paranthas.

Notes:

  1. The Onion paste should be fried till it attains golden colour or else it will remain raw and the taste will not come good.
  2. After adding the mashed Dal to the cooked spices, cook it under low flame for a longer time. It will make the dal thick and flavourful. If needed, add little amount of water.
  3. If you want to add smoky flavour to the dal, you can add it by using charcoal and ghee in the same manner as we did in Dal Makhani.
  4. Add the quantity of Salt as required as we have added it while boiling the Moong Dal.
  5. Add Water as per your requirement of the thickness of the dal.
