Tomato Chutney/How to make Tamatar ki Chutney

Tomato Chutney or Tamatar ki Chutney is one of the famous accompaniments in a meal. It takes very less time and also very few ingredients to make it. The taste of this Chutney is tangy and spicy. There are various ways of preparing Tomato chutney. We can prepare the chutney either by roasting or by frying it in oil. To prepare the Chutney by roasting, we first roast it in open fire by putting it over the steel wire or in a tawa. After roasting the tomatoes, the outer peel is taken out and is then mashed with hand or with a spatula. Then we add few ingredients such as chopped onion, chilli, mustard oil and salt. Mix it properly to make the Roasted Tomato Chutney.

 The simplest way of preparing the Chutney is by frying the tomatoes and cooking in oil. It is very simple and takes very less time to prepare. Roasted Tomato Chutney takes more time because of the roasting of tomatoes. We can also prepare the Tomato Chutney by grinding the cooked mixture in a mixer grinder to make a smooth paste. We can also serve it without grinding also. Cook the tomatoes till it becomes soft and tender and is easily mashed to make it in a paste form. Add water if required. To make the chutney spicy, you can add Chili powder also.

Today we are going to prepare the Tomato Chutney simply by frying the tomatoes with few ingredients in oil. We are not going to grind it. However if you want to grind it, you can go for it. Here we are not going to use onion while preparing it. Serve the Chutney with Samosa, Dosa, Idli, Cutlet or Sandwich. We can also serve it with regular meal also. Tomato Chutney is prepared by frying the Chopped Tomatoes with other ingredients in oil. It is cooked till the tomatoes become soft and mushy and attains the paste form.

Ingredients:

  • 8 medium Chopped Ripe Tomato
  • 2 piece Chopped Green Chillies
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger Paste (or Chopped Ginger)
  • A pinch Asafoetida
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 2 tablespoon Oil to fry
  • Salt to Taste

Instructions:

  • Heat 2 tablespoon oil in a Frying pan or Kadai.

  • Add Asafoetida, Cumin and Mustard seeds. Saute it for a minute.
  • When the Mustard and Cumin Seeds starts crackling, add the chopped chillies. Cook for 1 minute.
  • Next add the chopped tomatoes and salt.
  • Mix it well and cook it by covering the pan for 5-7 minutes or till the tomatoes becomes tender and mushy.
  • Now add Ginger Paste and Turmeric Powder. Mix it.
  • Cook again for few minutes without covering the pan.

  • Tomato Chutney is ready to be served. Take it out in a bowl and serve it.

Notes:

  1. Tomatoes used in this chutney should be totally ripe. It will give a very good taste. If the tomatoes are not ripe, the chutney will not come good.
  2. If required you can add water to it while cooking.
  3. If you want to prepare Sweet tomato chutney, just add sugar or gudd along with tomato ketchup.
  4. You can vary the quantity of Cumin and Mustard Seeds as per your requirement.
  5. If you like onion, you can add it. It will enhance the taste of the chutney.
