Aloo Pakoda or Punjabi style Aloo Pakora is an easy and quick tea time snack recipe. We prepare it with very easily available ingredients such as Potato and Gram Flour (Besan). People mostly prefer Aloo Pakoda as an evening snack in winter and monsoon season. We can also serve it as a side dish in breakfast along with other dishes. It is one of the most famous Pakora recipes in street side food vendors. In the evening Pakodas is the most common snacks. We also serve it when guests visit our place.

There are various types of Pakoda that we prepare at home with different ingredients. These ingredients include Onion, Cauliflower, Paneer, Brinjal, Methi, Bread, Potato, etc. Aloo Pakoda is one of them that we prepare from Gram Flour and Potatoes along with various spices. Aloo Pakoda tastes best when you cook the Pakoras till it is crisp. Crispy Aloo Pakoda is best to serve. To make Aloo Pakoda, firstly prepare batter with Besan, Water and Salt along with other spices. Spices include Carom Seeds, Turmeric Powder, Red Chilli Powder, Garam Masala and Asafoetida. Mix them to make smooth besan batter. Next heat oil in a kadai over medium heat. Dip the Potato slices in the batter and then deep fry them in oil till it is crispy and light golden in colour. Take out the Aloo Pakoda from oil and place over kitchen towel to absorb excess oil. Sprinkle Chaat Masala over the Pakodas and serve it hot with Green Chutney or Ketchup along with Tea or Coffee.

Aloo Pakora is a quick tea time snack prepared from Gram Flour and Potatoes along with spices such as Turmeric Powder, Chilli Powder, Garam Masala, etc.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large Potato
  • 1 cup Gram Flour (Besan)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Carom Seeds (Ajwain)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
  • A pinch Asafoetida
  • 1/4 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • 1 teaspoon Chaat Masala (or as required)
  • Salt as required
  • Oil to fry
  • Water as required

Instructions:

  • Wash the Potato and peel out the outer layer with the help of a peeler.
  • Now slice the Potato into thin slices of width 2-3 mm of round shape. If necessary you can wash the sliced potatoes once again.
  • In a large bowl take the Gram Flour, Carom Seeds, Turmeric Powder, Red Chilli Powder, Asafoetida, Garam Masala and Salt.
  • Mix all the ingredients properly so that all the spices are uniformly distributed with the Besan (Gram Flour).
  • Now add Water little by little and mix the ingredients to prepare the batter. Add the quantity of Water such that the consistency of the batter can hold the potato slices.
  • Check the batter for the spices and add more if required. Keep it aside for few minutes so that the Besan soaks the water.
  • Heat Oil on a pan or kadai over medium heat.
  • Take a slice of potato and dip it into the batter. Coat the slice with the Besan and then gently drop it into the heated oil.
  • In the same manner add more 4-5 slices. Fry till they are crisp and golden in colour.
  • Fry the slices by turning it in regular intervals. Take them out from the oil and place over kitchen towels to absorb the excess oil.
  • Fry the remaining slices in the same manner in batches. Aloo Pakora is ready to serve.

  • Serve Aloo Pakora by seasoning with Chaat Masala along with Green Chutney or Ketchup.

Notes:

  1. Along with Gram Flour you can also add Rice Flour or Corn Flour. Also if you want you can add Baking Soda (optional).
  2. The batter should be of appropriate consistency so that it is able to hold the potato slices. If it becomes thin you can add more gram flour. If it is thick add more water to it.
  3. While making the batter, do check that the spices are added in appropriate amount. If necessary you can add more spices because the taste of batter will only decide the taste of Aloo Pakora.
  4. To enhance the taste of Aloo Pakora, you can also add Coriander leaves by chopping it. Also you can use Rice Flour along with Gram Flour to prepare the batter.
