Pyaaz Pakoda (Onion Pakoda)

Pyaaz Pakoda or Onion Pakoda is a North Indian tea time snack prepared by deep frying the mixture of sliced onion and besan. Apart from sliced onion and gram flour (Besan), certain spices are also used. Pyaaz Pakoda is mainly eaten with chutney or sauce together with hot tea. It is the one of the most famous snacks and street food in many Indian homes. People mostly love to serve pakodas with tea. It is easy to prepare and is ready to serve snacks for guests in most Indian homes.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Gram Flour (Besan)
  • 2 medium Sliced Onion
  • 2 medium Chopped Chillies
  • 2 tablespoon Chopped Coriander Leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • A Pinch Baking Soda
  • Salt to Taste
  • Oil to Deep fry
  • Water to make paste

Instructions:

  • Take the Gram Flour (Besan) in a large bowl.
  • Add the Sliced Onion, Chopped Chillies, Coriander leaves, Chilli Powder, Turmeric Powder, Baking Soda and Salt to the besan.
  • Add water to the mixture and mix all the ingredients to make a thick batter. Keep it aside for some time.
  • Heat oil in a kadai over medium flame.
  • When the oil is hot, take small amount of batter in hand and gently drop small fritters one by one into the oil.
  • Deep fry until the pakodas turn its colour to golden brown. Keep on stirring the pakodas so that it is cooked evenly.
  • After the pakodas turn golden brown, take it out of the oil and place them on paper towel, so that the excess oil is absorbed.
  • Deep fry the remaining batter one by one and place them over paper towel. Onion Pakoda is ready to be served.

Notes:

  1. Add water to the mixture little by little, so that the consistency of the paste remains proper.
  2. Fry the pakodas over medium flame. If you cook over low flame, the pakodas will absorb more oil.
  3. Serve the pakodas with chutney or sauce together with hot tea

  • Pyaaz Pakoda is the simplest of all pokodas too cook. I would suggest everyone to make as an evening snacks.
