Rava Upma or simply Upma is a traditional South Indian breakfast recipe that we prepare from Rava. It is also referred as Sooji or Semolina in English. Upma is famous in South India but now it is very commonly seen in other parts of the country. You can serve it in breakfast or serve it as a snack. Rava Upma is a healthy breakfast recipe which is very light, easily digestible and high in nutrition. It is a very common breakfast dish in our morning table as it takes less effort in preparing. It is common in the diet of office going people.

Rava Upma or Sooji Upma is very easy and quick to prepare. Roasting of rava is the task which takes a little more time. If you have pre roasted sooji then the task of making upma becomes easier. Roasting of rava properly is the most important part. You can roast the rava in oil or without it. Here I will be roasting the rava in oil. Some people prefer to dry roast it, so if you want, you too can dry roast the sooji. To prepare Upma with pre roasted sooji, simply fry the ingredients and then add water. When the water comes to boil, add the roasted sooji and cook it to make tasty and delicious South Indian Rava Upma.

There are different variations of preparing Rava Upma. You can add different types of fresh vegetables as per your choice. You can use French Beans, Peas, Capsicum, Carrot, etc. Here I will be preparing the plain style South Indian Rava Upma without the use of any type of veggies. We must use fresh sooji to prepare upma because raw sooji gets easily spoilt if kept for long time.  To keep the sooji fresh for a longer time, you can dry roast all the sooji and keep it in air tight container. Whenever you are in need of rava, you can take it and quickly prepare any type rava dishes.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Semolina (Sooji)
  • 1.5 cup Water
  • 1 medium Chopped Onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chana Dal
  • 1/2 teaspoon Urad Dal
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 3 tablespoon Peanuts
  • 1 piece Green Chilli
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chopped Ginger
  • 8-10 pieces Cashewnut
  • 5-6 leaves Curry Leaves
  • 3 tablespoon Oil: 3 tablespoon
  • 1 tablespoon Ghee
  • Salt to Taste

Instructions:

  • Heat 1 tablespoon Oil in a pan over low flame. Add Semolina and roast it till it changes it colour to light brown.
  • Roast the semolina by stirring it continuously so that it does not burn. After roasting it, take it out in a bowl and keep it aside.
  • In the same pan heat 2 tablespoon Oil and add Mustard Seeds into it.
  • When it starts to sputter add Chana Dal, Urad Dal, Peanuts and Curry Leaves. Saute till they are light golden.
  • Now add Green Chilli, Chopped Ginger and Cashewnuts. Fry it for half a minute.
  • Next add Chopped Onion and fry till they are translucent.
  • Add Water and Salt to the onions. Bring the water to boil.
  • When the water starts boiling, add Roasted Semolina (Sooji) slowly into the water. Keep stirring the sooji so that no lumps are formed.
  • Mix it properly and cook for 4-5 minutes under low flame or till the semolina gets cooked properly.

  • Add 1 tablespoon Ghee and mix it uniformly so that it spreads all through the semolina. South Indian Rava Upma is ready to be served. Serve it with tea in breakfast or as snacks in the evening.

Notes:

  1. Here I have not used any vegetables. If you want you can add vegetables such as carrot, capsicum, peas, tomatoes, etc.
  2. The ratio of water and semolina should be proper to make tasty and delicious upma.
  3. Fresh Rava should be used for preparing upma. Also it should be roasted properly.
  4. Upma can be served plain or it can be served with coconut chutney.
