Coconut Barfi with Condensed Milk is an easy and tasty Mithai Recipe prepared with Condensed Milk and Desiccated Coconut. It is a traditional Indian sweet popularly known as Kopra Pak in Gujarat, Thengai Barfi in South India and Nariyal Ki Barfi in North India. This sweet has different names in different parts of the country but the process of preparing it at home is similar everywhere.
I frequently prepare this sweet at home since it is easy, simple and quick to make. Also this recipe mainly requires only two ingredients, Condensed Milk and Desiccated Coconut. You can prepare the barfi with Fresh Grated Coconut also. If you are preparing this Coconut Barfi with freshly grated coconut then first remove the upper brown layer with a knife. Then cut the white part into small pieces. Transfer the small pieces to grinder jar and grind it. Do not grind too much or else it will convert to a paste. I would suggest you to use market bought desiccated coconut since it makes our task easier.
During my childhood days of stay at home, my sister used to prepare this Coconut Barfi with Condensed Milk. This is where I have learnt this recipe of Coconut Barfi with Condensed Milk. Now since I am staying away from my parents and sisters, I have added this recipe to my favourite recipe list and keep preparing it on my own.
Coconut Barfi is one of my favourite Mithai. I keep preparing it at home with different variations. I will keep sharing these variations one by one. Coconut Barfi with Condensed Milk is the best variation that I like the most. Mostly I prepare the Barfi with this method only as it is less time consuming. Apart from this we can prepare this sweet recipe with other variations where we can use ingredients such as Milk, Sugar, Fresh Cream, Chopped Dry Fruits, Cardamom Powder, Rose Water, etc. These variations also include the colour of the barfi. We can use natural food colour to give a colour to the barfi.
There are different methods of preparing Coconut Barfi where we vary the ingredients as per our choice. Mainly there are three different methods of preparing Coconut Barfi.
- Coconut Barfi with Condensed Milk: In this method we use Condensed Milk along with Desiccated Coconut. Both the ingredient is together cooked under low to medium flame till the mixture becomes thick and starts coming together. It is then transferred to a mold to make the barfi. You can also add slight amount of milk if you want. This method takes the least time to prepare compared to other methods.
- Coconut Barfi with Mawa (Khoya/Khowa): In this method we cook the Desiccated Coconut and Mawa together along with sugar to make Coconut Barfi. Here also you can add milk if you want. This method also takes very less time to prepare.
- Coconut Barfi with Milk: In this method, we use Grated Coconut, Milk and Sugar. This process take a little more time compared to other methods. Grated Coconut and Sugar is added to Milk and then cooked till all the milk evaporates to form a thick mixture. It is then transferred to a pan or mold to make the barfi.
Today we will be preparing Coconut Barfi with Condensed Milk. If you want to prepare the Coconut Barfi with any of the other methods then please visit Coconut Barfi with Milk and Coconut Barfi with Mawa.
To prepare Coconut Barfi with Condensed Milk, take the Condensed Milk and add it into a non-stick kadai or pan. To it add the Desiccated Coconut and Cardamom Powder. We add Cardamom Powder to give a good and aromatic flavour. Cook the mixture under low to medium heat till the mixture starts coming together and becomes thick. The mixture should be such that it can hold the shape of the barfi. Keep stirring the mixture continuously so that it does not stick at the bottom.
When the coconut mixture attains the right thickness, switch off the flame and allow it to cool slightly. Grease a pan or mold with butter or oil. Transfer the mixture to the mold and spread it evenly. Also level the surface with a spatula. Now sprinkle some Chopped Dry Fruits over the barfi. Press the dry fruits with spatula so that it can hold the barfi. Allow the mixture to cool down. When the mixture cools down, take a sharp knife and cut the barfi into a square or diamond shaped barfi. Coconut Barfi with Condensed Milk is ready. Cool it completely and then serve it to your favourite one.
