Date Tamarind Chutney (Khajur Imli Ki Chutney)

Date Tamarind Chutney or Tamarind (Imli) Chutney is a sweet and tangy chutney recipe made from dates, tamarind, jaggery and other ingredients. All the ingredients are cooked in water and then is strained to make the sweet tamarind chutney.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Seedless Dates/Khajur
  • 1/2 cup Tamarind (Imli)
  • 1/2 cup Jaggery (Gudd)
  • 1 teaspoon Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dry Ginger Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Fennel Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin Powder
  • A pinch Asafoetida (Hing)
  • 1 cup Water
  • Salt to Taste

Instructions

  • Take Khajur (Dates), Imli (Tamarind) and Jaggery in a large bowl.
  • Add Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder, Fennel Powder, Coriander Powder, Cumin Powder, Dry Ginger Powder, Hing and Salt. Also add water and mix it.
  • Switch on the stove and put the bowl over the flame.
  • Boil the ingredients for 8-10 minutes or till the dates and tamarind becomes soft and tender.
  • Keep on mixing it in between. The water will start becoming thick.
  • When the ingredients become soft, switch off the stove.
  • Allow the chutney to cool down completely till it is safe to handle.
  • Add it to mixer grinder and grind it to make smooth paste. Take it out of the jar.
  • Now with the help of strainer, strain the chutney. Store it in air tight container.
  • The liquid will be thicker. You can add water if you want to make the chutney thinner.

Notes

  1. To make the Date Tamarind Chutney, use seedless dates and tamarind.
  2. To reduce the time of boiling, soak the dates and tamarind in warm water for half an hour. It makes the task easier.
  3. The thickness of the chutney can be varied by using water. If you want to make thicker chutney, add less water. For thinner chutney add more water.
  4. This chutney can also be made without the use of dates. You can try to make it without using dates.
